JSS Medical Research is managed by a team of seasoned professionals.

John S. Sampalis, B.Sc., B.A. (Hon.), M.Sc., Ph.D., F.A.C.E.

CEO and Chief Scientific Officer

Dr. Sampalis is founder and CEO of JSS Medical Research founded in 1997.
He is a tenured professor of Surgery and Epidemiology & Biostatistics of McGill University, the University of Montreal and University of Laval. Throughout his career he has received numerous scholarships from provincial and federal funding agencies including the Medical Research Council of Canada, the National Health Development Program and the Fonds de la recherche en santé du Quebec. With over 140 peer-reviewed publications in high ranking journals and more than seven million dollars in research funding, Dr. Sampalis is recognized as one of the leading clinical epidemiologists in the world, and one of the top trauma researchers in Canada.

Possessing extensive expertise in health services research, clinical trials and the evaluation of medical technology, Dr. Sampalis also offers services as a Research and Epidemiological Consultant for numerous pharmaceutical companies, hospitals and government organizations and agencies.

Dr. Sampalis currently holds a Medical Scientist Salary Award from the Medical Research Council of Canada and has previously received numerous prestigious scholarships and awards including the National Health Research and Development Scholar from Health Canada. In addition, he participates as a reviewer for over five leading peer-reviewed journals and as a committee member for provincial and federal funding agencies.

As Chief Scientific Officer at JSS Medical Research, he continues to contribute to scientific aspects of the clinical trials in collaboration with the VP, Scientific Affairs team to ensure sound scientific expertise and that data quality and integrity are maintained.

Stella Boukas, B.A., CCRP

Chief Operations Officer

Ms. Boukas holds a Bachelor’s degree in Psychology from McGill University with training in Epidemiology and Biostatistics. She has also been certified by the Society of Clinical Research Associates (SOCRA) as a Certified Clinical Research Professional (CCRP). She has over 25 years of experience in medical research management including Clinical Trials (Phase II-III), Observational Studies, Chart Reviews and Literature Reviews. She has been working with the JSS Medical Research team since its inception in the 1990s.

Ms. Boukas has been a key person in structuring and implementing programs such as PHYSCAN™ and the CRC Network™ at JSS Medical Research which have proved to be cost efficient tools for project completion by significantly reducing site recruitment activities. She collaborated with the IT and QA departments to develop the JSS Medical Research Electronic Data Capture (EDC) system to facilitate remote data capture and the Clinical Database Management System (CDMS) for double data entry, as well as to implement Oracle Clinical software. She led her teams in developing the Data Management Tracking Log (DMTL) which is an electronic tracking tool designed to track study related activities and issue reports.

In addition, she plays a key role in the development and coordination of global operations activities.

Joanne Watson, M.Sc.

Chief Business Officer

Ms. Watson has a Masters Degree in Pharmacology from Dalhousie University, Halifax and an Honors Degree in Science from the University of Western Ontario, London. After completing her degrees, Joanne worked in the clinical research department of a large international pharmaceutical company. She co-founded Integrated Research Inc. (IRI), a full-service contract research organization in 1992 and served as its President and Chief Executive Officer until the company merged with JSS Medical Research in 2014. Joanne’s experience extends to all facets of the CRO business, and multiple therapeutic areas involving drug and device products as she was directly involved in the majority of the clinical trial projects undertaken by IRI. The company earned various accolades including the Profit 100 Top Women Business Owners, Champion de la Croissance (L’Actualité), West Island Chamber of Commerce Best in Service She currently holds the position of Chief Business Officer at JSS Medical Research Inc., and is head of the business development team.

Emmanouil Rampakakis, Ph.D.

Vice President, Scientific Affairs

Dr. Rampakakis received his Ph.D. from the Department of Biochemistry in McGill University and the McGill Cancer Centre, and obtained post-doctoral training in Pharmacoepidemiology at McGill University and the Jewish General Hospital.

Dr. Rampakakis has over 12 years of experience in scientific research and has contributed in the conception, design, analysis and interpretation of several large scale, national and international, registration and observational studies. He has numerous peer-reviewed publications at high impact scientific journals (e.g. Nature, Journal of Bone and Mineral Research, Arthritis Care & Research), and presentations at international conferences. In addition he serves as a reviewer for four peer-reviewed journals.

He joined JSS Medical Research in 2009. As Vice President of Scientific Affairs, Dr. Rampakakis oversees a team of biostatisticians, epidemiologists, physicians, and medical writers responsible for the scientific aspects of studies and is the primary liaison between JSS Medical Research, Sponsors and Principal Investigators for these matters.

Sanjay Machado, MD

Vice President, Global Operations & Integration

Dr. Machado obtained his MD from University of Pune, India. He specialized in family medicine and held private practice. He has authored several publications and presented abstracts and posters at international conferences. He has over 18 years’ experience in multinational pharmaceutical, CRO, Bioequivalence & Phase I and Site Management Organizations. He held management positions at ICON Clinical Research plc, ADA Medical Ltd, AstraZeneca & Biovail Contract Research. He organized and managed a Site Management Organization (SMO) including qualified staff of investigators and site teams. He created, presented and positioned new business opportunities for the SMO for further growth.

Dr. Machado has worked on products in several therapeutic areas including; Gastroenterology, CVS, Respiratory, Dermatology, Endocrinology, Obstetrics & Gynaecology, Oncology, Radiology, Psychiatry and CNS. He also has clinical experience in generic drug development, medical devices and radio nuclear imaging studies.

Prior to joining JSS Medical Research, he founded Venn Life Sciences a multinational CRO, now trading on the London Stock Exchange and served as its Chief Operating Officer since its inception.

Dr. Machado joined JSS Medical Research in 2011 and his responsibilities include global expansion of JSS Medical Research through mergers and acquisitions, providing logistical support to clinical operations and oversight of global studies. He played a key role in establishing JSS Medical Research Colombia S.A.S. in 2012.

Marc Malouin, CPA, CA, CGMA, CPA (U.S.A.)

Chief Financial Officer

Mr. Malouin is a professional accountant and member of the Quebec and Ontario Order of Chartered Professional Accountant (“CPA CA”) as well as a Certified Public Accountant (“CPA”) in the United States. Mr. Malouin holds a B.Comm. from the University of Ottawa.
He is a seasoned executive with more than 30 years of experience in business leadership and finance with a proven track record in operations, business development, contract negotiation, performance enhancement, merger and acquisition both at the national and international level.

As a dedicated leader and result-oriented team player, Mr. Malouin can quickly rally stakeholder holders towards stated objectives. He has been associated with world-class companies such as, Provigo, SNC-Lavalin, Bombardier and Sonaca North America. Mr. Malouin has served on Board and Audit Committees of public companies (TSX and NASDAQ) operating in the field of information technology. Socially engaged, he is currently active with Parkinson Québec.

Marianna Boukas, B.A.

Executive Director of Quality Assurance

Ms. Boukas holds a Bachelor of Arts degree from McGill University, as well as a Certificate in Technical Communications from Concordia University and has received compliance training from SNC Lavalin Pharma (SLP). She has over twenty five years’ experience working in clinical settings and academic research in the McGill University Health Centre (MUHC), as well as in pharmaceutical research. She joined JSS Medical Research in 1998 as a Project Manager.

In 2004 she participated in the development of the current Quality System infrastructure under the mentorship of compliance specialists from SNC Lavalin Pharma (SLP ). Since that time Ms Boukas has managed the Quality System independently with the SLP compliance specialists acting as third party auditors.
Her experience and expertise provide a sound platform for implementing continuous improvements to processes and ensuring that the JSS Medical Research Quality System remains current with evolving industry standards including Good Clinical Practices (GCP), FDA 21 CFR Part 11, Good Documentation Practices (GDP), Health Canada, EMEA and other applicable regulatory requirements. She has developed and maintains the Employee Training Program, ensures the development, review and tracking of standard operating procedures (SOPs), coordinates the systems validation, , the investigational product and the auditing activities.

Ms. Boukas participated in the development and validation of the JSS Medical Research Electronic Data Capture (EDC) system, Clinical Database Management System (CDMS) for double data entry and the Data Management Tracking Log (DMTL). In addition, she coordinated the validation activities of Oracle Clinical software during the implementation stage and subsequent upgrades.
Currently she is coordinating the expansion of the Quality System to encompass all global activities.

Michel Bordeleau, B.Sc., MBA

Global Director of Information Technology (IT)

Mr. Bordeleau holds a B.Sc. in biochemistry from the University of Guelph and an MBA from HEC Montreal. He has over 20 years of experience in the pharmaceutical industry, including five years in research laboratories, 12 years in research IT (laboratory automation/laboratory management systems, electronic notebooks, chemical and biological inventories, barcoding), three years in healthcare marketing support (consumer and physician questionnaire development and application programming) and seven years in IT team management. Mr. Bordeleau leads a team of programmers as well as network, database and system administrators. Together, they are responsible for the development, maintenance and support of the Oracle Clinical systems, as well as the in-house JSS EDC software and underpinning infrastructure, such as phone systems, networks, and servers. Mr. Bordeleau is actively involved in the improvements of systems, software and business processes to enable JSS Medical Research to better meet current and future needs of its clients.


Natalie Harvey

Director of Clinical Operations

Ms. Harvey holds a B.Sc in Biochemistry from the Université du Québec à Montréal and a M.Sc. in Biology from McGill University. Ms Harvey has been navigating the pharmaceutical industry for the last 20 years holding positions both in the Commercial and Medical departments allowing her to understand the focus and business imperatives of these two sides of the pharma industry. In 2003, Ms Harvey was an essential contributor to the launch of a novel clinical position responsible for field implementation of phase IV and epidemiological studies at Merck Frosst Canada and in 2009, with Novartis Pharma Canada. In 2009, Ms Harvey implemented an innovative national structure of field Nurse Educators responsible for the development, implementation, and daily management of state of the art Phase IV clinical trials and Patient Support Programs in the fields of Bone Health, Asthma, Psychiatry, Multiple Sclerosis and Oncology; one of those programs a mandate of Health Canada. Ms. Harvey currently holds the position of Director, Clinical Operations functionally and operationally overseeing a team of Project Managers and other clinical operations associates in the development and implementation of projects ensuring that project goals and timelines are met. Ms. Harvey also contributes to the assessment of future business growth related to Patient Support Programs and Call Centers at JSS Medical Research.

Nathalie Beliveau, Ph.D.

Director of Clinical Operations

Dr. Beliveau holds a B.Sc and M.A. in Kinesiology as well as a Ph.D. in Healthcare Administration from the Department of Health Sciences at the University of Ottawa. She has over 15 years of clinical experience working in both the private and public sector of research project and program delivery. The core of Dr. Beliveau’s experience has focused on building and leading clinical trial programs in Canada, South America and Europe within a large global CRO. She was responsible for global staffing requirements and program KPI adherence across seven countries. Dr. Beliveau has accepted international opportunities with the mandate of supporting organizational growth and clinical program implementation in the United Kingdom from 2007-2009 and then again in 2012 when she was based in Milan, Italy.

Dr. Beliveau joined JSS Medical Research in 2016 and her primary responsibilities as Director of Clinical Operations include program delivery and clinical oversight across the operational teams. She oversees a team of Project Managers and all aspects of JSS’s monitoring service provision within Canada and the United States.

Marie Maxime Hubert, B.Sc., M.Sc.

Manager, Health Economics and Outcomes Research

Ms. Hubert holds a bachelor in biomedical sciences, a graduate diploma in drug development and a master’s degree in pharmaceutical sciences with a double specialization in pharmacoepidemiology and pharmacoeconomics. She gained a practical understanding of economics, data analysis and drug policies as economic consultant at IMS Health. She has experience in market access from roles in multinational pharmaceutical companies; preparing the launch of a new chemical entity (dronedarone, Sanofi-Aventis) as well as generating pharmacoeconomic evidence for established indications (adalimumab, AbbVie – formerly Abbott). Ms. Hubert also led multidisciplinary teams in the design and execution of treatment adherence studies. Ms. Hubert has built reimbursement dossiers for individual provinces, private drug plans, Quebec’s Institut national d’excellence en santé et en services sociaux, the common drug review (CDR) and the pan Canadian Oncology Drug Review. She also reviewed reimbursement submissions as part of her duties as health economist for the CDR at the Canadian agency for drugs and technologies in health. After completing a contract with JSS Medical Research as independent consultant, Ms. Hubert joined the team as Manager, Health Economics and Outcomes Research (HEOR). She is currently expanding the HEOR franchise at JSS Medical Research.

Yohana Paola Granados, M.Sc.

Director of Clinical Operations – Latin America

Ms. Granados has training as a Bacteriologist from the Universidad de los Andes, Colombia and as a Specialist in Management of Public Health from Universidad del Rosario, Colombia. More recently, she completed a Masters in Clinical Trials degree with the Universidad de Sevilla, Spain in 2009. She held progressive roles as a Clinical Research Associate with several major pharmaceutical companies, before joining the CRO Latam Clinical Trials in 2008 as a Regulatory Affairs/Project Manager. She was promoted to Chief, Clinical Operations LatAm Clinical Trials, and then to Director, Clinical Operations of JSS Medical Research Latam S.A.S., when the company merged with JSS Medical Research Inc. Her experience is wide-ranging in private industry, academic and government sectors, and encompasses regulatory affairs and clinical aspects, in multiple therapeutic areas including vaccines, cardiovascular, infectious disease, biosimilars, oncology, cosmetics and medical devices from phase I through phase IV. With over 10 years of experience in clinical trials in Latin America, she has the important role of providing business development support for emerging markets in addition to the day-to-day oversight and leadership in operations including the development of best practices and continuous improvement programs for the region.

Dr. Ajoy Kumar

Country Head, JSS Medical Research Ltd, India

Dr. Kumar is a medical graduate from Jawaharlal Nehru Institute of Postgraduate Medical Education and Research (JIPMER), Pondicherry with postgraduate diplomas in business administration, hospital administration and preventive and promotional healthcare.

Dr. Kumar has a meritorious track record, and the experience of managing large business operations like Apollo Hospitals, Cumin Diesel and Tata Sons. At Apollo Hospitals, Dr Kumar was responsible for overseeing operations of the hospital group, and other businesses of Apollo. Dr. Kumar is a certified Black Belt in Six Sigma.

In 2005, he joined Max Neeman International, serving as its Chief Executive Officer, until the company was acquired by JSS Medical Research Inc. In his current role as Country Head, JSS Medical Research Ltd., India, he is responsible for overseeing the region’s business operations of the company and is focused on stable growth, client satisfaction and long-term relationships.

Dr. Renu Razdan

Vice President, Operations, India

Dr. Razdan pursued an ICRETT Fellowship of UICC Geneva, an international agency for research on cancer, Lyon (France), and G.S.F. Fellowship at German Cancer Research Centre (DKFZ), Heidelberg (Germany). Dr. Razdan worked at Ranbaxy Laboratories for six years and then joined Max Neeman International in 2005, serving as the Chief Operating Officer, responsible for oversight of Operations Departments as well as heading the Business Development team in India for client relations in Europe and South East Asia.

Dr. Razdan is currently the Vice Chairperson of the Association of Contract Research Organizations (ACRO).

She brings over ten years of experience and has played an active role in the development and growth of the company.

Dr. Miguel Botero Montano

Director, Business Development

Dr. Botero earned his medical degree at the Universidad Javeriana, and later on received a Marketing Specialists degree at the same institution. He has over 20 years of experience working with big pharmaceutical companies specializing in business development, marketing and product management for Latin America. Dr. Botero has also received specialized training certifications in Strategic Innovation, Development Programs, Field Force Effectiveness and Executive/Managerial leadership. Prior to joining JSS, he worked for Bristol Myers Squib, Novartis, Grunenthal and Boehringer Ingelheim as the Business Unit Manager / Latam Regional Manager for cardiovascular and diabetes portfolios. His experience in most of therapeutic areas in Latam provides Sponsors with intimate and in-depth knowledge about critical needs to optimize all phases of product life cycle from pre-launch to post approval phases.

As Director, Business Development for JSS Medical Research Latam S.A.S., his goal is to represent JSS to the Sponsors as an ideal partner to solve treatment gaps, adoption barriers and access challenges by generating meaningful clinical and pharmaco-economic data.
